These wall panels on the staircase to the balcony are of Cipollino marble, with Istrian marble borders. The kaleidoscope effect is achieved by taking four slices from a well-marked block of marble. Two of the slices are turned over, so that was what face-up is now face-down (remember that the lines go right through the marble, as in a stick of rock). In the set below, the second and fourth panels have been turned over, left to right. The blocks can now be arranged into the quartered pattern, as in the panels.
