The American Cemetery and Memorial at Madingley, dedicated in 1956, is about 3 miles west of Cambridge. It contains the graves of 3,812 American servicemen and women, most of whom were crew members of American aircraft based in the British Isles. A roll of honour gives the names of a further 5,126 men and women who were Missing in Action, lost or buried at sea, or whose remains could not be identified at burial.

The cemetery chapel (below, right) was designed by Perry, Shaw, Hepburn and Dean of Boston, Massachusetts. Its high ceiling and east wall are covered in a spectacular mosaic by Francis Scott Bradford (1889-1961), an awe-inspiring tribute to the fallen. Looking up to the skies, the visitor sees squadrons of aircraft, accompanied by mourning angels, on a flight towards the Resurrection and Last Judgment. This is announced by the Archangel on the wall over the altar.
