Lothian Road mosaic, Edinburgh

Vitreous glass mosaic tiles have often been used as a cladding for the outside of buildings. Here, an arrangement of sets of four tiles in squares makes a bold statement on the side of this shop frontage. It contrasts strongly with the surrounding Georgian greyness.

The closer shot below demonstrates how a striking pattern can be created with the simple geometric use of a limited range of coloured tiles. However, in this case the geometry has been upset by the dimensions of the space it fits - a single row of tiles has been inserted near the left hand border.
