While the borders of this angel in Winchester cathedral are made up from blood red tesserae and black and white tiles, the main part of the picture is an "opus sectile" mosaic. It is formed of shaped pieces of fused glass which have been painted with the design. The angel's halo is made of shaped pieces of mother of pearl, for extra shine. angel in opus sectile
