Encaustic tiles
encaustic tilesEncaustic tiles are ceramic tiles with a decoration made of different colours of clay inlaid into their surface. This is in contrast to tiles with a painted or printed design, or those where the colour or pattern is produced by the glaze. This kind of tile was originally produced in the Middle Ages, and enjoyed popularity again during the Victorian gothic revival. One method for producing encaustic tiles is to press a stamp into firm clay and then fill the indentation with a contrasting colour of clay.
