There is a great deal of religious imagery in Isidore's mosaics, so it is perhaps surprising that this secular scene should cover the west wall of the inside of the chapel. It shows a rural landscape with Chartres in the background. In the foreground is a maternal figure, and to the right a shepherd and his dog. The faithful dog is another recurring symbol. I particularly like the way the dog is highlighted by the lighter background, from which the sheep emerge. |
