Roman mosaic workshop project

This project tells you how to make a mosaic of a Roman guilloche pattern. This mosaic was made at a children's event at Caistor Roman Town (Venta Icenorum) near Norwich, Norfolk. The artwork is 1.5 metres by 0.5 metres (roughly 5 x 1.5 feet) in size and contains about 1,500 ceramic tile pieces (tesserae). All the preparation was done beforehand so that children could take part in the workshop by sticking the pieces down to the board (the direct method).

You can see the stages of preparing the tiles, drawing the design, the workshop and finishing and grouting the mosaic.
